There are three headings:
-
•Competitions
-
•Submissions With Deadlines
-
•Submissions With No Known Deadline.
If you aren't a submitter (why not? Nothing to lose! Rejection is something we all share!) then the themes can make great writing prompts/exercises.
Although I mention only fiction or poetry, many publications accept non-fiction, art or other forms, so do check if interested. Good luck and do let me know of successes!
DECEMBER is, in my experience, the best month to submit and enter. Most people are too tied up with Christmas or other winter festivals to give as much time as usual to submitting and entering. There are also more opportunities at this time of year than at any other. Don’t miss out!

20th Dec ‘Shinigami Stories: Reaping the Harvest of Souls—CONTEST ISSUE. Stories about the Grim Reaper. Stories can be any genre, though horror might be the most common one concerning the God of Death. If you could craft me a shinigami story that has sci-fi or fantasy elements, that would make my inner genre-blender lover boogie. Also, consider making the reaper a woman. Neil Gaiman did and it worked wonders for him. But don’t copy his version of Death. Make it your own.’ Flash and short fiction. http://theweretraveler.wordpress.com/call-for-submissions/

20th Dec ‘We’re looking for prose, poetry, and art that features LGBT+ characters, but where the focus of the piece is on something OTHER than the character’s sexuality or gender. Meaning we want entertaining, interesting stories of queer characters doing awesome things, not just dwelling on the fact that they are queer. Our magazine has a strong commitment to positivity and creating a “safe space” for our readers, so no depictions of homophobia, transphobia, bullying, rape, racism, etc. will be allowed, even by the villains of the piece. Are they on even footing or exploitative? And if so, who’s being exploited and how? Beyond social issues, what anatomical issues might come up? Are offspring possible in your world and what happens to them? No haiku (unless you’re better than Bashō), tanka, or feminine rhyme. We have it out for feminine rhyme. We like image-driven. We like musical. 31st Dec ‘The theme is time. The genre is dark fiction. A broad spectrum, we know, but what we mean by this is truly the dark spectrum – from horror to supernatural, to slipstream – and all points in between. That said, Splatterpunk and Bizarro fiction are probably not the right fit for this gathering. This is also not the venue for high fantasy or hard sci-fi, but if you have a shadowy urban fantasy or a dark tale that happens to take place upon a space freighter, that’s fine.’ 15,000-25,000 words http://darkrecessespress.com/submissions/

‘We're looking for 2,000 words or fewer—a nice, digestible internet length—of speculative fiction honing in on the tech, science, and future culture topics driving the zeitgeist. We're looking especially for nearer-future fiction; think more sentient chat bots or climate-changed dystopias and less far-flung space operas.’ http://motherboard.vice.com/read/how-to-submit-stories-to-terraform

‘We are open to all genres and seek great work that grounds itself primarily in narrative: traditional, experimental, lyrical, pataphysical—just so the writing is powerful and no longer than 700 words. Submissions don’t have to be about lightning or keys, though we won’t rule out work that deals with either. In short, if you have written imagistic, traditional or experimental, genre-bending, serious or humorous narrative prose or poetry, we’d love to read it.’ http://lightningkeyreview.com/blog/submissions/
‘We publish all forms of poetry, prose, flash, essay, digital-media, photography, etc. If it can be considered “art” or an expression with an artistic intention, Twig will consider the work for publication.’ http://snappingtwig.com/contact/
