Cathy says: I only started submitting my poems and stories to prove to my best friend, who kept nagging me to get them published, that no one would accept them… I was delighted to be wrong! In 2009 I was runner up in the Woman & Home Fiction Prize, in 2010 I won the Marple Humorous Poetry Prize and I’m now a regular on Manchester’s lively Spoken Word circuit. In 2012 I won the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Prize, the Sampad ‘Inspired by Tagore’ Contest, the Malahat Review Monostich Contest and the Swanezine Poetry Contest, and blogged for the Huffington Post. In 2013 I won the M.R. Jordan Short Fiction Prize, the Plenitude ‘Twiction’ Contest and a Creative Futures Literary Gold Award. My work has been published all over the world in such publications as Popshot, Third Wednesday, Cha, Starline and Prole. I co-edited the anthologies Best of Manchester Poets vols. 1, 2 and 3 and my collection, ‘Contains Strong Language and Scenes of a Sexual Nature’ was published recently. I’m currently writing a book called ‘How to Win Writing Competitions (and make money doing so) and yes, I have bought my best friend a drink or two. See more at www.cathybryant.co.uk

Looking for a critique or help with your work?

Regretfully I’m unable to help with critiques or any other kind of feedback on your work. I wish that I could, but I simply don’t have the time to do it unpaid. Your best bet is to go to your local writers group, or find one online, if you can’t afford a professional critique. An awful lot of the advice I would give is in my book ‘How to Win Writing Competitions – and make money‘, if you want to sharpen up your writing and make it more likely to do well. Good luck!

  1. I’ve been following your column month after month and only see your subheadings now. I see how busy you are yet you make time for helping the general ‘public’ . I so wanted to send my congratulations when your play was staged. God bless the work of your hands.

    • Thank you so much, Natisha! I’m afraid your comment didn’t come through to me as it should have done, so I apologise for the delay in replying. Loads of people helped me when I was starting out, so I wanted to pay it forward and help other writers. Thank you again for your kind remarks. It’s mch appreciated! Cathy xxx
